Ella Byas Scholarship for Justice and Leadership

Purpose

The Leadership Lessons From ("LLF") Ella Byas Scholarship for Justice and Leadership supports individuals from under-represented populations who aspire to lead work focused on eliminating inequities and disparities that stem from racism and poverty.


Scholarship Award

The Recipients will receive one (1) award of up to $5,000.


Eligible Expenses

The award may be used for educational expenses-including tuition, fees, books, and supplies; and to attend educational and professional conferences.


Eligibility Criteria

  • Current enrollment in good academic standing at a U.S. college or university.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0).
  • Financial need beyond the applicant's existing financial resources.
  • Applicant must be a member of one or more of the following:
  • Black/African American.
  • Asian American (South Asian or East Asian).
  • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.
  • Hispanic/Latinx.
  • Native American or Native Alaskan.
  • Other under-represented populations such as LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities.


Application Process

Each applicant must complete the LLF online application and upload additional

documentation as listed below:

  • The online application is available at www.leadershiplessonsfrom.org/scholorship-application.
  • The online application can be saved and revised before submission using the "Save Progress" button.
  • The online application must be submitted using the "Submit" button.
  • Current resume with complete contact information (full name, current address, phone number, and email) of the applicant.
  • Letter from a college or university official confirming current enrollment in good standing.
  • Official transcript-including the current GPA.
  • Personal statement of up to 1,000 words including the following:
  • Applicant's aspirations for leadership.
  • How the applicant envisions working to eliminate inequities and disparities that stem from racism and poverty in their future leadership role.
  • Explanation of the need for financial assistance.
  • Amount of financial assistance requested.
  • If the applicant intends to use a portion of the scholarship to attend a leadership educational or professional conference, details about the conference must be provided—including dates, location, and registration fee. If the applicant received an invitation to attend or present at the conference, documentation of such an invitation should be provided as well.


In addition, two letters of recommendation are required. The recommendations may be from a professor, mentor, or other individual who is not a family member or personal friend. The letters must be current (written within the past three months) and include the following:

  • Complete contact information (full name, title, current address, phone number and email) of the letter writer.
  • How the person knows the applicant and the basis of that recommendation.


Each recommendation should be sent by the individual letter writer directly to info@leadershiplessonsfrom.org.


Selection Process

Only completed applications with all required supporting documentation will be considered. The LLF Financial Awards Committee reserves the right to request additional information and a virtual interview.


Award Determination

Applicants will be notified of the Committee's decision via email within forty-five (45) calendar days of the application submission deadline. Approval or denial of an application for financial assistance is at the sole discretion of the LLF Financial Awards Committee.
